How the BBC is helping children learn from home
Starting from today, the BBC will be doing their bit to help children learning from home during the third national lockdown by offering curriculum-based programming as part of their daily schedule. With a minimum of three hours programming focusing on primary-level education being broadcast on CBBC and two hours of secondary-level education being broadcast on BBC Two, this is certainly a great boost to every parent’s home-schooling toolkit.
The move comes as concern grows over children who are unable to access online learning at home and aims to make sure that lessons are available to as many children as possible. Previously, the BBC were offering online lessons only, so this initiative helps children with limited data access get the lessons they need. As well as being available as part of the daily schedule, the lessons will also be offered on the red button and on BBC iPlayer.
Discussing the new initiative, Tim Davie, BBC Director General, says: “Ensuring children across the UK have the opportunity to continue to follow the appropriate core parts of their nation’s school curriculum has been a key priority for the BBC throughout this past year.
“Education is absolutely vital - the BBC is here to play its part and I’m delighted that we have been able to bring this to audiences so swiftly.”
A scheme being praised by many, as a large proportion of children take their learning home, the BBC offer a lifeline to parents who might struggle with home-schooling. Alongside TV lessons, BBC Bitesize offers a wealth of information for children across all age ranges and education levels, giving parents a range of resources to draw on when taking on learning remotely with their little ones.
