The Ultimate Secret - How to Avoid Summer Holiday Burnout

Avoiding Summer Holiday Burnout - Top 5 Tips

Six to eight weeks of entertaining the kids does not need to be hard work, nor does it need to be stressful.. To help you through, we’ve put together a list of fun and economical activities (and tips) which the whole family can enjoy!

The Activities:

Experiment in the Kitchen

Eating homemade food is not only satisfying, but also good for health and wellbeing! Develop your children's independence by encouraging them to have fun in the kitchen! You can check out this easy bread recipe. If baking is not your thing, grow some salad vegetables in your garden (or on the windowsill!). Cress seeds are a lovely, easy way to start.

Make Idea Jars

Find a couple of empty mason jars and decorate them to your liking. Help the children to label the jars - one being ‘hours’ and the other being ‘days’. Then, rip up some paper and write a fun activity or day out on each piece. Anything quick should be placed in the ‘hours’ jar. Longer activities which could take the whole day go into the ‘days’ jar!

Simply pull a piece of paper from the jar the next time the kids are bored, and you’ll have something fun to do!

The Summer Reading Challenge

Each year during the summer holidays, local libraries will usually host a Summer Reading Challenge. The event is for primary-school aged children. This year's focus is Animal Agents, which encourages the kids to get involved and solve mysteries! The challenge is to read 6 books, cover-to-cover, throughout the holidays. For each book read, the children can collect a sticker for their animal agent detective folder.

Our Tips

Now that you have a few ideas of how to keep the children entertained, we thought it would be beneficial to share a couple of tips on how to manage your mind during the holidays!

Make Realistic Plans

Plan for your family’s interests, strengths, and limitations, not for your own or someone else’s expectations. If your kids don’t enjoy hiking, but you’re going somewhere that boasts the best hiking trails in the world, maybe plan for a 2–3 KM hike rather than a 20KM one.

That’s not to say you can’t do these things if other members of your group want to, but maybe plan for a half day instead of a full day, or give your less enthusiastic family member an out partway through.

There’s no point in forcing people through experiences because you think they “should” have them if they’re going to be miserable. Those aren’t the memories you want to be making!

Schedule Downtime

Schedule it in, otherwise, it may not happen. Make it a priority. Say no upon occasion, when you notice your list of commitments starting to grow, or when you just don’t feel like doing the thing!

Rest whenever you are able to do so. Self preservation and self-care are vitally important. There’s no need to exhaust yourself.

We hope this has helped you to prepare for the remainder of the summer holiday!
