Hiring Private Staff After BREXIT

In an uncertain world where we have been hit by BREXIT and COVID all at once there are lots of private employers out there not sure about whether they can employ the same domestic staff they would have previously. 

Luckily, many household and private staff are on the list to be able to access a Skilled Worker Visa. The below jobs come under this category (for a full list of eligible jobs click here):

  • Au Pair

  • Nanny

  • Estate Manager

  • Security Manager

  • Chef

Entry Requirements

Your employee will need to have a good knowledge of English and if approved can stay for up to 5 years before having to extend. For other roles not on this list those from the EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can use this eligibility checker to be sure as to whether they are eligible to work in the UK under the current rules. For those individuals who wish to visit the UK from overseas for up to 6 months and bring their staff with them you can apply for an Overseas Domestic Worker Visa (https://www.gov.uk/overseas-domestic-worker-visa). It will cost £516 and your staff must have worked with you for a minimum of 1 year prior to application. 

Is it worth it?

It is definitely more complicated than it was before, there is no denying that, but the government are still encouraging British employers to continue to employ the highest quality staff from outside of the UK after BREXIT. 

With a huge number of bilingual and qualified candidates residing in the EU it is definitely worth considering looking beyond the UK for your next hire.
